Moving Checklist
A move is not one job, it is thirty small ones spread over about eight weeks. Working backwards from the date is what keeps it manageable.
Eight weeks out
Get quotes and choose your mover. Ask what the estimate includes and what would change it.
Start a folder, digital or paper, for quotes, confirmations and anything with a reference number on it.
Begin sorting room by room. Anything you would not pay to transport should go now, not on the day.
Six weeks out
Order packing materials, or arrange for packing to be done for you.
Tell schools, and start the paperwork for records to follow you.
Book time off around the move date, including the day after.
Four weeks out
Start packing the rooms you barely use: guest rooms, lofts, the good china.
Arrange the utility transfers and final meter readings.
Confirm parking, lifts or building access at both ends, and any permits either needs.
Two weeks out
Confirm the date, the address and the crew size with your mover.
Redirect the post, and update your address with the bank, insurers, and anyone who bills you.
Arrange for pets and small children to be elsewhere on the day.
The last week
Pack everything but the essentials, and finish the box that stays with you.
Defrost the freezer and run down what is in the fridge.
Set aside the things travelling in your own car so nobody loads them by mistake.
Moving day
Walk the crew through the house before they start, and point out anything fragile or awkward.
Keep phones, chargers, keys, documents and payment with you rather than in a box.
Check every room, cupboard and the loft before the truck leaves. Then check them again.
